Are bras really necessary?

We’re sure that bare-chested women everywhere, like Kirstin Dunst and Miley Cirus, are revelling in the news; Smugly confident in the future of their own breasts. But the rest of us, conventional-bra wearing types, might need to question the necessity of our brassieres.

We all know that feeling of relief at the end of a long day; when you reach behind you and un-clip your bra. It’s the same as that feeling when you leave the office on a Friday afternoon, or get your period when you weren’t quuiite sure you would.

Perhaps the results of this new study will help us all breathe a little easier, banishing our bras to the female wasteland of corsets and bloomers.

Jean-Denis Rouillon, a professor at the University of Franche-Comté, who conducted the study, over a period of 15 years, found that medically, physiologically and anatomically, breasts did not benefit from “being deprived of gravity.”

And not only that!

Roullion’s research shows that women who did not use bras benefited in the long term; developing more muscle tissue to provide natural support, and their nipples gained a higher lift!

“When bras are worn, the restrictive material prevents such tissue from growing, which may actually accelerate sagging,” the study concluded.

But don't throw your bras away just yet!

Despite the findings, Rouillon said it would be dangerous to advise all women to take off their bras as the study's sample may not be representative of the population.

The team at women24 are yet to be converted. For one, the thought of exercising without the added support would make the already arduous trip to the gym even more unlikely!
