Celeb fashion at Coachella Festival

The Coachella music festival has become as well known for its style as it has for its music offerings. Each year more and more celebrities hit the festival and get snapped moving between stages. And each year thousands of blogs post photos of the best and worst of these looks. I have been doing it for years on Style Guide CT and so I was shocked to find that this year the proffered festival fashion was altogether rather flat.

How many years do we have to see the exact same style that Kate Moss and Alexa Chung wore to Glastonbury eight or nine years ago? Surely we have moved beyond the faded denim shorts with the pockets hung out by now? Well, no, it appears not. Unless you are actually Alexa Chung. She, much like Kirsten Dunst, Solange and Katy Perry, successfully wore pretty, cool dresses to the festival and looked fantastic.

Katy Perry

A nice, printed, maxi or mini dress is cool enough for the high temperatures, modern enough to be fashionably current and easy enough to throw on in a festival situation to be a real winner. I really believe that this is the best option for 2013 festival style.

Floral Maxi Dress

Of course you can go with the shorts, but this season try a lace pair, with a scalloped edge in black or white. It does the same job as the denim hot pants, but looks prettier and more up to date. Julianne Hough looked fabulous in hers, paired with a crop top, a fedora and a pair of biker boots. And Kate Bosworth wore a Topshop version that was my top look of the festival.

Alessandra Ambrosio

And if you are going to insist on the faded denim shorts, keep your top in classic white. You won’t stand out but you won’t be making any grave errors either. Also make sure your accessories are perfect – a cross body leather bag from Missibaba would be the ideal partner for your shorts and tee combo. Add stacked fabric bangles, big sunglasses, ankle boots and some headgear and you are good to go.

Try your best to avoid the whole flower-child thing. If you must, a garland of fresh flowers on your head can look pretty – but make sure they are fresh for the real impact to be made. But try not to look like you are a hippy at a trace party. This is not the right look for 2013.

Finally, be decent. No matter how hot it is, you want to keep your dignity. Avoid the Tallulah Willis mistake of wearing a bathing costume with boots all weekend. It looks desperate and is an absolute disaster when you trip and fall over. No one wants to be remembered for that kind of style.
