Design fundis to hit Jozi

Talk Show, a free-flow discussion forum to be held on 10 and 11 August at Decorex Jhb, Gallagher Estate, Midrand, will be raising the roof when twenty industry gurus from as far a field as Mumbai to Melbourne, and Durban to Cape Town lift the lid on the latest thinking in design and décor.

Two international speakers, Andrea Mina, associate professor at RMIT University's School of Architecture and Design, Melbourne Australia and Conrad Gonsalves from Mumbai, India will join the stellar cast of influential local designers and architects on the first day of the two-day programme.

Lead by Prof Ora Joubert SA architects Stefan Antoni, Hugh Fraser, Richard Stretton, Kate Otten and Sarah Calburn will join Mina and Gonsalves the great debate questioning architectural trends – Rebirth, Replication or Invention? Prof Des Laubscher of the Greenside Design Center and President of Design SA will also take part in the debate.

On 11 August interior designers, fabric experts, colour fundis and magazine editors will take part in the interactive Talk Show workshops.

"South African design glows with confidence and energy, says Decorex director Melanie Robinson. "While Talk Show, now in its 3rd year, is primarily a platform for South African designers and architects to exchange ideas, it is also important for the local industry to interact with influences from abroad. We are delighted to have Andrea Mina and Conrad Gonsalves joining our own movers and shakers."

South African born Andrea Mina holds the position of Associate Professor Interior Design in the School of Architecture and Design at RMIT University, Melbourne. Andrea graduated from Cape Town University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1980 and completed a Master of Design (Urban Design) at RMIT in 1994. He practiced in Johannesburg until migrating to Australia in 1986. Since 1992 he has held a fulltime academic position in the Interior Design program at RMIT University and has played a key role in cementing the program's national and regional reputation for design teaching excellence.

Conrad Gonsalves, Life member and past president of the Indian Institute of Interior Designers hails from Mumbai, India where he runs Conrad Gonsalves & Associates. He represented the Indian Institute of Interior Designers at several international Conferences for IFI and the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association (APSDA). Closely involved in design education he lectured at various design institutes such as the L.S. Raheja School of Architecture in Bandra, Mumbai. 10h30 – 12h30: The great debate – architectural trends
Host Prof Ora Joubert sets the scene, followed by the great debate questioning architectural trends – Rebirth, Replication or Invention? Leading SA architects Stefan Antoni, Hugh Fraser, Richard Stretton, Kate Otten and Sarah Calburn join international architects Andrea Mina from Australia, Conrad Gonsalves from India and Prof Des Laubscher of the Greenside Design Center and President of Design SA.

14h00 – 15h00: Trends Shaping SA Design
Conrad Gonsalves of Mumbai, India, hosts Garth Walker (Orange Juice Design) on his walk through South Africa's streets and townships in his search of a boerewors roll and what makes him African. Peta Bank from Switch Design focuses on the importance of being professional in the design world, while Garth Holmes (AFDA Film School) jolts the audience with the AFDA movie that won the student Oscar.

Theme: Design takes its cue from nature
10h30 – 11h30: A flourish of fabrics
Natural new weaves, tactile textures and trims, feel-good fabrics and fabulous fringes – interiors dress up like never before. Host Natalie Thiart (former décor editor Top Billing magazine) and fabric experts Lise Butler (The Design Team), Steve Black (Black Fabrics) and fiber artist Ronel Jordaan, whose felt creations took the design world by storm, take to the floor.

12h00 – 13h00: Doyennes and new directions
House & Leisure editor Lianne Burton and Les Aupiais (Elle Décor) give their personal take on influences shaping the world of interiors: from forensic design to the allure of imperfection.

14h00 – 15h00: Inquisitive colour
Plascon's Colour Forecast for 2007 unveils a captivating collection of colours inspired by discovery. Mandy Allen (Editor, Plascon Colour Magazine), Nicci Scholtz (Aspen Flowers) and Abigail Donnelly (Taste & Eat Out) look at fashionable hues in furnishings, food and flowers.

15h30 – 16h30: Let there be light
The Dark Ages have been banished and a wave of innovative advances and clever designs from purely practical to deliciously decorative now steal the limelight. Host Alan Fennell (editor, Designing Ways) explores the many moods of modern lighting with Roger Martin (Roger Martin Architects) and interior designer David Strauss.
