Twitter turns racist at crowning of Miss America 2014

After the crowning of Indian-American Nina Davuluri Twitter exploded with ignorant, racist comments, proving that even the leader of the Free World is a country riddled with racism and a culture of intolerance.

Last night in New Jersey, Nina Davuluri was crowned Miss America 2014 – the first Indian-American woman to win the title and the 9th woman of colour. (We’re counting Vanessa Williams even though she was stripped of the title.)

What should have been a celebration of this woman’s victory, unfortunately turned into a racist and stupid twitter outcry.

The use of shocking hate-language towards the Indian and Muslim communities was rife.

We guess, in the evaluation of beauty, colour, religion and ethnicity play a huge role after all - to some people at least.

These are some of the racist tweets directed against Nina Davuluri:

But not everyone shared the same racist sentiments, some people had more positive responses:

When asked for a response on the racist criticism, Nina Davuluri told The Guardian that she was not interested in the negative comments and would rather brush them off. The aspiring doctor considers herself to be a proud American and will not let bigoted comments redefine who she is.
