Winter Wardrobe Warnings

You should always look the part at the office, no matter what the temperature is outside.

So here are some Winter Wardrobe Warnings:

Boots
Not all of this season’s boots are acceptable in the workplace. Thigh high (Pretty Woman) boots can send out all the wrong signals. Stay away from boots with tassels, faux fur, heavy buckles and studs. Opt for leather or suede instead of shiny patent leather or synthetic looking material. As cute as they might be stay away from Wellington boots! Ugg boots at work are a sure way to destroy your credibility in an instant.

Pantyhose & leg warmers
Your choice of pantyhose can make or break your outfit. Winter woollen tights come in all types of patterns and colours – keep these for evening wear or fun weekend wear. The 80's leg warmers belong on Jane Fonda doing aerobics – refrain from using them at work no matter how cold you are.

Anoraks, windbreakers, puffer jackets
Anoraks and windbreakers are best to go watch a sports event rather than wearing them to the office, it is too casual an item. The puffer jacket is best suited for climbing Kilamanjaro, not the corporate ladder.

Capes, pashminas, trench coats
So what can you wear to fight the cold? A cape is the ultimate in ladylike refinement (and warmth); capes are shaping up to be the season’s warmest cover-up. A pashmina shawl can be used all seasons and always looks stylish. The neutral colour trench coat is always a worthwhile timeless investment.

Jerseys/Cardigans

At work avoid wearing the oversized, large cable knit jersey aunt Mabel knitted for you. Rather opt for a fine weave cardigan and make use of layering e.g.a thermal vest, polo neck jersey and cardigan. Steer away from the crochet and fleecy type tops.

Headwear
The song may say “You can leave your hat on” but never inside the office. So…no beanies, berets, baseball caps, floppy wide brimmed hats and newsboy caps. Only wear them after hours or if you work in an over the top creative work environment.

Scarves
Thick, bulky woollen; fleecy; fake fur type scarves should only be used for outdoor warmth. Once at the office rather choose a scarf from a silk, cotton or a sheer type fabric as an accessory to complement your outfit.

Gloves
Wear gloves that will add style to your corporate look – stay away from the fingerless gloves in different colours.

So take heed of these Winter Wardrobe Warnings and keep warm in style!
