Worst books on the big screen

accreditation
Sometimes, movies just get it so very wrong. Maybe it’s that the author wasn’t involved writing the screen-adaptation. Sometimes the casting is just off. Or the script doesn’t reflect the character’s personality.

Either way, when Hollywood translates books for the big screen, what comes out is completely different from the original story.

Following, our post on best movie adaptations based on books, we thought we'd ask you to share your big screen book flops.  Have a read and see whether you agree or disagree with our readers.

The Time Traveler's Wife (byAudrey Niffeneger) was a terrible adaptation. As far-fetched as the story line is, I really enjoyed the book with its varied layers, descriptions and the emotion it evoked within me.

The movie fell short in so many aspects - it was as if it was just slapped together as an afterthought. Having said that, there are so many books-to-movies that have been massacred in the name of art. {Q & A vs Slumdog, Confessions of a Gambler, Revolutionary Road, to mention but a few}

Harry Potter; if you haven't read the books you probably won't understand half the movie. Also, they leave out important bits and characters that I feel are essential. Maybe I'm prejudiced because I'm comparing it to my imagination, but I feel the movies could have been better.
Amanda

My Sister's Keeper. They changed the ending completely in the movie - which changed the whole point of the story.
Vanessa

The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown! The film did the book NO justice. I was very disappointed.
Mervyn

The Beach. I loved the book, but all the subtlety and character development was totally lost in the movie. They took the characters and some story plots and made up their own sequence.
Hila

Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates. The movie, although having the draw card with stars like Kate and Leo, was a little lacklustre and lost the true depth of this truly amazing story.
Cathy

Twilight, the book was fantastic. I loved every minute of reading it, but Twilight the movie is not what it should've been. It was a low budget film for a great book which should've been made with more money.

Eat, Pray, Love was akin to a travel show that ran past its  hourly time-slot. I think it's one of the more disappointing roles Julia Roberts has played, and she's my favourite actress. Also, Dear John was a terrible film adaptation as well as The Da Vinci code.
Muneera

For me the Bourne movies were horrible and such a disappointment after the fantastic books. I get the fact that they had to change some details to fit it into today's world, but they did it so badly that they completely changed the story!
Sumanda

Dear John - the book had so much detail which caused serious emotions and made for an excellent read. The movie, on the other hand, had many scenes wrong, left out a few important bits and just couldn't compare to the book in anyway; quite disappointing because Dear John is my favorite book
Kerry

Stephen Kings’s Cujo ; the movie did not depict the feelings of the dog like the book did, the book explained in detail what was going through the dogs mind but the movie could not bring that across to the audience.
