Warriors of the Storm by Bernard Cornwell (published by HarperCollins in 2015)

Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg faces many a threat, including lords who try to usurp his lands and priests who try to usurp his gods.

However, the squabbles of his daily life pale in comparison to the newest threat; the Norsemen have invaded England. Under Ragnall, a fearsome leader fuelled by bloodlust, the invaders are quick to make their intentions clear; they seek land, and at any cost.

However, matters are further complicated by schisms both within England and among the invaders. The Norse attack comes at a time of religious significance – highlighting the strained relationships between the native Christians and Pagans.

Uhtred and his men (as well as the mighty Æthelflaed – the queen of Mercia) must now stand against the enemy in order to protect their land, their homes and their honour. For Uhtred, there is more on the line; his very family is threatened, as his daughter has married Rangall’s brother.

Warriors of the Storm is a brilliant taste of time travel; dating back to the formation of England as a unified country and the skirmishes which allowed for this process.

Cornwell allows readers to relive the past in the coolest way possible. While historical, his is a book of modern significance; if you like the TV show Vikings, you will love this. The book may be the ninth in a series, but it reads perfectly as a standalone novel; an impressive feat, given the dearth of history and geography which it spans.

Cornwell pens a superb story which is rich in detail and thoroughly enjoyable. A fully immersive experience, Warriors of the Storm is a crafty nod to the history of the English language, religion and society, and it makes historical warfare sexy.
