1. Own it: The first thing women worry about when considering wearing a wig is what everyone will think. The key is to be confident and own your new look. No one will know it’s a wig, unless you tell them.

2. Consult a hairdresser: Your favourite wig style may not be available in the length, shape or colour that you prefer. A hairstylist can trim, colour and tame your wig to suit your desires.

3. Use the right products: Choose products that suit your wig’s texture. For instance, human-hair wigs are best maintained using sulphate-free products. These require lots of deep conditioning. To maintain synthetic wigs, choose products that won’t weigh the fibre down.

4. Build a collection: Just like clothing, it’s important to swop your wigs and have different options for different days.

5. Protect it: If you love cooking, keep your hair away from the heat. Synthetic wigs catch fire easily – even hot steam can cause irreparable damage such as shrinkage.

6. Mute the shine: Synthetic hair can be too shiny. To minimise sheen, apply hair powder or dry shampoo.

7. Get creative: Just because a wig comes in a certain style, doesn’t mean you have to wear it the same way every day. Shift your look from a side parting one day to a middle parting the next. Hair bands and hats also add versatility.

8. Look after the hairline: Make the wig appear more natural by leaving some of your own strands out near your hairline, and comb them to blend with the wig.

9. Try new textures: If you’re all about natural hair, opt for styles like afros and braids.

10. Dare to go bold: You can go from warm in winter to light in summer. For a dramatic finish, get an expert to dye the hair for you.
