Would you burn your hair to get rid of split ends?

accreditation
There comes a time in every girl’s life where she has to suck it up and trim off her split ends. This can be extremely hard, especially if you have been growing your precious locks for some time.

And while trimming split ends will help your tresses grow faster and healthier, there is an alternative to getting the chop.

Unfortunately, it means exposing your hair to an open flame.

Velaterapia is a Brazilian hair treatment that involves twisting bit of your hair and singeing the unhealthy hair that sticks out – like so:

According to Mashable this treatment has been around since the ‘60s and has, once again, gained popularity after Victoria's Secret models Alessandra Ambrosia and Barbara Fialho posted pictures of themselves undergoing Velaterapia.

Now, before you go buying candles and twisting your hair, you should know that this is best done by professionals. You know, in case you burn off a little more than your split ends.

There are also some other problems that can arise, besides dealing with the smell of burnt hair. Refinery29 spoke to trichologist, Elizabeth Cunnane-Phillips, to get more info on the safety of Velaterapia. She says that although the treatment does remove split ends, it also makes the fibres of your hair vulnerable, which may lead to weaker strands.

Now that you know the pros and cons, it’s up to you.

Would you try out Velaterapia?
