Finding the best bangs to suit your face shape

Remember when Beyonce cut a fringe a few years ago now and the fuss that it caused? Even Queen Bey didn’t quite get it right. Read this before you take to any scissors. Or make like a few celebs who clip one in to test drive the look for special events.

OVAL

Oval faces tend to be symmetrical with the jaw being only slightly wider than the temples.
Fringe: If you are lucky enough to have an oval face, you can get away with most kinds of bangs, so go ahead and experiment; just make sure you keep them in good condition.

Celebs: Rashida Jones, Beyonce

LONG

A long face means your temples and jaw are the same width, and you’re likely to have a high forehead.
Fringe: Longer faces are prone to having higher and more prominent foreheads, which can be quite frustrating as this can seem to drag the face down. You can opt for thick, blunt and straight bangs to cover up.

ROUND

A round face is characterised by having a short forehead and the temple is often the same width as the jaw. Those with round faces tend to look more youthful.
Fringe: If you have a round face, try to choose bangs that are curved and graphic to accentuate your cheekbones. This will appear to slim your face and reduce the emphasis on your cheeks.

Celebs: Jennifer Hudson, Emma Stone

SQUARE

A square face will have a prominent jaw and very defined bone structure.

Fringe: Square faces can look quite severe with certain types of bangs, avoid any kind of blunt cut bangs as these will make your face look hard. Try to stick with feathery bangs with longer heavier sides to help soften your features. You can cut the length just below the brow.

HEART

Face goes narrower towards the chin, forehead is pronounced and thin chin

Fringe: Brow-grazing fringes are a great look on classic heart shaped faces. Skimming the eyes with a straight fringe will detract attention away from the point of the chin and hide a larger forehead whilst bringing out your eyes.

Celebs: Kerry Washington, Emily Ratajkowksi

DIAMOND

This type is not very common, and it appears very angular and sometimes quite bony.

Fringe: You can wear either a straight down or a side swept bang; however, the key is to have the bangs start a little more inset than the width of the forehead. This will help balance out the forehead, which is wider than the rest of the face, with the chin.
