How to care for and maintain your dreadlocks this season

This hairstyle can have loads of challenges when it comes to a hair-care regime but head stylist at ORS SA, Pamela Pelema has a few tips and tricks for us.

Keep it odour-free

Your scalp, as with the rest of your skin, flakes on a daily basis to remove dead cells. Unfortunately, it is not always practical to wash our hair every day. This results in a build-up of dead scalp cells in the form of flakes which could result in your dreads losing its fresh smell. Your hair also absorbs the odours around it.

You can use a scalp and hair cleanser on the days between washes or rub in some tea tree oil to prevent any bacteria or fungus from growing on the scalp. Another key contributor that influences the freshness of your dreadlocks is sweat: make sure you give your hair time to dry out after a workout. Wash your hair once a week with a sulfate-free shampoo to moisturise the hair without stripping it.

Avoid bald patches

A receding hairline affects many of us, When pulled too tightly, dreads move the hairline back over time. It is therefore imperative that you ask your stylist to not pull your hair too tight. Another factor to consider is alternating your style at least once every second week to minimise the hair being stretched in the same direction for prolonged periods.

Many dreadlock wearers plait their dreads or continuously wear them in a bun which is not a good idea. The weight also plays a role in a receding hairline, particularly when tied. Try not to retwist your hair too often as this can also cause breakage and thins hair at the root.

Tips to keep your dreadlocks looking good

  • Apply hair fertiliser daily to strengthen and nourish the hair
  • Apply a sheen spray to your dreadlocks three times a week for maximum shine.
  • Use an uplifting shampoo (it exfoliates the scalp) once a month to reduce flakes and relieve itching.
  • Treat your hair and scalp with a protein conditioner before each twist session for added strength.
  • Protect your hair at night by wearing a silk nightcap or buy a silk pillowcase to minimise friction and moisture loss. It will also prevent your hair collecting fluff.
  • Massage your scalp for a few minutes each evening before you fall asleep. No only will it improve blood circulation to encourage hair growth, it will nourish the scalp by spreading natural oils.
  • Always twist your hair in the same direction to avoid any thinning along the length of the loc.
