4 glitter makeup trends to rival the sparkle of Christmas tinsel

accreditation

Glitter is no longer just for music festivals, the red carpet or theme parties.

Thanks to 2017's daring nature, a few '70s and '80s beauty trends have been revived, and glitter is definitely one of them.

Some of our favourite hit-makers (celebs below) can definitely attest to this fact seeing as they too are into all things shimmery, glittery and overall glistening.

While you're probably more familiar with their dramatic performance makeup looks, you can't deny that there's some inspiration which can be drawn here:

The thing about glitter is that it can be spotted from a mile away when you're wearing it even when you apply just a little sprinkle.

As Violette, the Estée Lauder global beauty director says, "glitter is a light-catcher, so you can play with it and trick the eyes."

This means glitter is one of those "less is more" makeup products due to the optical illusion it creates. Sometimes the magic lies in subtlety.

Here are 4 subtle looks you can try out this party season:

Stars in your eyes

An eyeshadow look that shines best when the rest of your makeup is nude. You're bound to turn heads if you opt for red hues or copper tones, but any other bright colour will also do the trick.

However, you can never go wrong with some poppin' gold eyeshadow in the inner corners of your lids.

Alternatively, try out some sparkle in Pantone's 2018 colour of the year, ultra violet.

Use:

Bobbi Brown caviar mini lip and eye palette, R670 at Red Square.

Twinkle, twinkle little pout

Metallic lip gloss is all the rage right now. And the bolder, the better.

You can keep the rest of your look muted, but don't hold back on your lip colour.

Your actual lip colour of choice doesn't have to be metallic. You can simply apply a normal lipstick and then dab on some metallic pigment/glitter over it, finishing it off with some gloss.

Use:

MAC Viva Glam Taraji P. Henson lipglass, R240 at Edgars.

DARE super shimmer lip gloss, R230.

Black Radiance continuous colour pigment pots. Available at Dis-Chem.

Send nudes

... to your cupid's bow and inner eye corners.

Estee Lauder's Violette told Into the Gloss that this look is all about creating depth. She advises that you use golds and yellows as they appear nude in the light.

Use:

Urban Decay eye pencil in goldmine, R225 at Foschini.

Be the envy of the moon

The aim isn't to necessarily go full Ke$ha, but to project more of a Beyoncé post-performance glow.

So simply dust some shimmer on your T-zone, cheek bones, and brow bones once you've applied the basics.
