5 makeup must dos for dark skins

accreditation

Very often dark-skinned women are told all the things they shouldn’t do with makeup. We are told not to wear bright colours and that we should think really hard before wearing a red lipstick. Light-skinned women on the other hand are forever encouraged to "find their perfect red".

Nonsense, I say. Here are 5 dark-skinned makeup musts:

1. Find your nude

There are different shades of nude makeup products that are made for different dark skin types, so it’s all about finding the perfect shade for your complexion. Elle suggests that a nude lipstick one shade lighter or darker than your skin tone are most flattering.

We love: Essence Long-lasting lippie, R39.

2. Use more than one shade of foundation

Most dark-skinned people are naturally two-toned. We tend to be lighter in the center of our faces.

So it's advisable to use two shades of foundation even if you don’t have dark spots or uneven skin tone. Try mixing Revlon Colourstay foundations, I really like blending Cappuccino and Caramel.

3. Opt for darker blushes

Choosing the perfect blush can be quite a hassle for dark-skinned girls, but listen and listen carefully: just because you’re dark-skinned doesn’t mean you can't rock darker blush.

Dare to go for your berry reds, browns and purples, these colours do not only flatter your skin, but they bring out a healthy glow.

Try Clinique soft pressed powder blush, R335.

4. Don’t forget your powder

For a quick fix, say to avoid shine, try using translucent powder - it will give your skin a matte, fresh look.

Use Yardley loose powder, R149.

5. Embrace colour

Dare to wear bright colours. Be it a lipstick, an eye shadow or a blush.  If you are hesitant and think you might look over-the-top, here’s a bit of inspiration that'll prove otherwise...
