The oily skinned girl's guide to getting your glow on like a unicorn woman

accreditation

Life can be tricky when you're a gal with oily skin. You want to achieve that highlighted glazed doughnut look, but sometimes you end up looking like the serviette soaking up the doughnut's grease instead.

Trust me, I know the feeling. Especially in summer.

We oily-skinned people tend to manage this problem by carrying blotting paper and powder in our handbag.

This often means avoiding makeup with a shimmery effect because why would anyone want to polish a pair of patent leather shoes, right? They're already so damn shiny.

But having oily skin doesn't mean you have to feel left out of the highlighter conversation or that you have to suppress your highlighter FOMO.

So here are a few tips on how to give your face the perfect glowgasm:

Mattifying primers are your friends

Beauty blog All Dolled Up gives us a few primer suggestions to apply on your T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) that will manage oiliness throughout the day.

Shop them here:

Smashbox photo finish pore minimising foundation primer, R475 at Foschini's online beauty counter.

L'Oreal Infallible foundation primer, R199 at Clicks.

While beauty vlogger Cynthia Gwebu swears by this Urban Decay de-slick complexion primer, which retails for R450 at Foschini.

TIP: Just be careful of over-mattifying your face to the point where you strip it of its natural glow.

Opt for medium-to-full coverage foundation

In my experience oil-free foundation works best (and for longer) if you're trying to avoid a shiny appearance.

However, some people have said that their skin feels rather dry and taut when using oil-free or matte foundations and it's also harder to blend their blush and eyeshadow.

So go for medium coverage foundations as they give you the best of both worlds - no visible oiliness and room to play around with makeup.

So what are your highlighter options?

If you prefer a subtle highlighted look, All Dolled Up advises that you use cream highlighters such as the NYX liquid illuminator to give you an understated glow.

For a more poppin' facebeat the golden oldie MAC Mineralize skin finish powder highlighter comes highly recommended.

You can also layer your highlighter with a different kind of shimmer such as this Swiitch Beauty #GLOWGASMPALETTE, R450 on their site.

And just like that, you're a sparkly unicorn.
