VIDEO: How the new 'lip tattoo' is done

accreditation

After the '80s permanent makeup became rather uncool.

But the new semi-permanent lip tint is nothing like a lip tattoo.

First of all, organic ink is used instead of tattoo ink. Refinery29 notes that "Tattoo ink, which was traditionally used in the past for semi- and permanent makeup, does not fade evenly and turns into colours that look synthetic. Lip Define (lip tint) boasts a more natural appearance, rather than a 'I got my lipstick tattooed on' look."

You choose the exact shade you want, as the therapist can mix whichever colour you desire. Plus, because it's organic it fades to about half of its original hue - leaving your pout looking beautifully blushed.

We consulted Nicol Frank of Blush South Africa and asked her about the benefits of this procedure. She said that "It has the ability to emphasise natural beauty while saving you time and money. If you are tired of reapplying lipstick throughout the day, or you are dissatisfied with thin or crooked lips, this is for you. The treatment actually creates collagen and elastin in the skin, so the lips then start to produce their own collagen. It plumps up the lips and is naturally anti-ageing."

The procedure:

"This procedure takes about 2-3 hours (depending on the thickness of your lips). It is not painful. Your lips will look darker than the colour you choose, the colour is not accurate straight after treatment, it is often a reddish colour for the first few days," says Nicol.

Once done your lips will form a light scab on the surface. Once the scabs come off the colour goes very light, almost invisible. It takes about 6 weeks for your full colour to pull through the skin as it penetrates 7 layers deep. Each week you'll see more and more of the colour come through.

Nicol showed us what's involved as her client Cleo wanted to have the tint in order to create more symmetry and to enhance her lip line.

Consult your therapist before getting this treatment and be sure to ask about any crucial aftercare. The tint will cost you around R3600-R3900.
