We all know that beauty comes in all forms. But often, what’s presented to us on runways, in fashion and beauty ads and in the media, seems rather homogenous.
That is why we applaud Sudanese-born fashion model and activist, Nykhor Paul on her recent call for change in an industry lacking in diversity.
Paul recently took to Instagram saying that she’s sick of apologising for her blackness.
Although not wishing to offend anyone with her words, she calls make-up artists out on being ill-prepared to work with darker skin tones.
She shared that she even, at times, had to bring her own makeup to a professional show or shoot, “when all the other white girls don’t have to do anything but show up”.
Historically, mainstream makeup lines have catered to Caucasian skin tones, but companies have slowly been developing foundations and beauty products for darker skin tones leaving makeup artists with no excuse.
According to .mic, Paul boldly pointed out that it’s about adjusting our expectations of what ‘beauty’ is and that we expand this definition, applying it to real-world changes.
