1. Ice cubes
If fancy treatments aren’t an option, head to your freezer for some ice cubes. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Dr Justine Hextall broke down the ways in which our environment with air pollutants can easily dull our skin. Rubbing ice cubes over your skin is believed to reduce redness and improve blood circulation which will leave you with a radiant glow.
Wrap an ice cube in a soft cloth and smooth it over your face, or suck on one (if you can resist brain freeze) – it will chill the thousands of cells in your cheeks, causing an increase in circulation.
2. Bone broth
Bone broth is a matter of simmering the bone and cartilage of animals in water for a period of time in order to extract the nutrients. YUM (or not)! Sounds crazy, but many women have been jumping on the bone broth wagon lately. In fact, it’s so popular that a New York restaurant, Brodo, has customers queuing for it.
Because broth is nutrient-rich, it is great for glowing skin. Registered Nutritionist on the Dr. Oz Show, Esther Blum, even suggests we make our go-to morning elixir broth instead of coffee. It’s hydrating and rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium which have multiple benefits like reducing inflammation in the skin. 3. Shave your face (minus the shaving foam!)
Face shaving – otherwise known as dermaplaning – for women became a much talked about and bona fide trend in 2016. Apart from it leaving you with smooth skin which makes your makeup glide on effortlessly, it removes dead skin cells which usually make your complexion look dull since it often leads to clogged pores. A smoother surface will also reflect light more effectively, leading to that much-wanted JLo glow.
4. Change your breathing routine
We’re not even joking. Check out our recent article on the benefits of nose breathing. This study found that higher blood oxygenation (achieved through nasal breathing) was associated with healthier facial appearances. More oxygen enters inside your bloodstream and more blood gets delivered to the skin, resulting in a better-looking, healthier skin tone.
5. Laugh a little
The old wives tale “smile and you’ll instantly feel happier” has another benefit to it – laughing can have a direct impact on our skin. Like correct breathing, this study also shows how laughter increases blood flow. So give your body those natural feel-good chemicals and good-looking glow by laughing through your stress, because stress and anxiety actually constricts blood vessels.
6. Chillies and cayenne pepper
We’re on the fence with this one, but Sri Lankan beauty vlogger Rochelle Wick and her friend, beauty blogger Habiba, made a chilli face mask last year and swear by its radiant results.
According to the Daily Mail they were researching ancient beauty secrets incorporating natural ingredients and discovered that chillies and cayenne pepper were commonly used to help women get their elusive glow going.
