Causes of eye puffiness include genetics, dermatitis, excessive crying, stress, hormonal changes, changes in weather, sinuses, hangover, bad diet, lack of sleep and an allergic reaction.

Be sure you are doing all of the below to reduce puffiness:

Not sleeping with your makeup on

Use a good eye make-up remover to gently wipe away any make-up on your eyes.

Moisturising your face at night

Make sure your face, especially your eye area, gets enough moisture. This helps the skin to retain its elasticity and strength.

Using sunscreen every day

The sun’s rays can cause the thin skin around your eyes to become even more fragile.

Minimising your salt intake

Avoid salty food as it can cause your body to retain water and lead to puffy eyes.

Propping your head up

Place a pillow or two underneath your head before sleeping as lying flat can cause fluid to build up underneath your eyes.

Getting at least seven hours of sleep

Exhaustion or lack of sleep can affect your skin.

Avoiding booze

Alcohol has a dehydrating factor, which can make the skin under the eyes feel thinner and the presence of fluid more noticeable.

Home remedies to try

If you already have puffy eyes, here are remedies you can try at home:

Cold spoons

Chill six metal spoons in your refrigerator for 10 to 15 minutes. Press the rounded part of the spoon against your eye for a few minutes until the spoon becomes warm. As the spoon warms, replace it with another cold one from the refrigerator.

Tea bags

Dip two teabags in hot water for a few minutes, then take them out and let them cool down. Lie down, put the tea bags over your eyelids and cover them with a soft cloth. Leave them in place for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat a few times a day.

Cucumber

Cut a cucumber into thick slices and place them into the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Place the cold cucumber slices on your eyelids for about 10 minutes or until they become warm. Repeat the process several times a day.
