Oh look, the world is finally celebrating round-faced women

accreditation

Ever since a Twitter user recently tweeted pictures of Rihanna and Beyoncé with the caption "Genuinely excited for round/chubby faces to become a beauty trend," a conversation about a possible round-face renaissance being ushered in, started.

However, those pictures are not depictions of either of their natural face shapes - Beyoncé was pregnant at the time and this is RiRi's (rumoured) happy relationship weight face.

The conversation about the rise of the round face gained even more traction when one of the fastest growing women's sites Babe.net published an article earlier this month about how beauty standards may be shifting to accommodate those of us with chubby cheeks.

Does this perhaps mean we can stop (face) beating ourselves up over not being able to achieve the perfect contour?

In a world which has always heralded chiseled jawlines and Naomi Campbell cheekbones as superior, a lot of grown women with round faces and 'invisible' jawlines have settled for being called 'cute' rather than 'beautiful'.

Round-faced celebrities like Selena Gomez, Chrissy Teigen, local actress Terry Pheto and Miranda Kerr have been representing round-faced gals for years now, but circular visages was never considered the 'in-thing'.

Perhaps this is the bittersweet side of representation, where on the one hand, the positive portrayal of things which were previously considered unattractive means they can finally be celebrated.

While on the other hand, it can easily make one's confidence dependent on edited images of celebrities who have access to world-class makeup artists, personal trainers and cosmetic surgeons.

What will be the next 'in' flaw? We have to realise that we don't need celebs to make 'imperfections' cool. We need to do that for ourselves. So excuse me while I go appreciate my flat, round face regardless of whether it's trendy or not.
