Astromatch: Bella & Edward

accreditation
It's been a good couple of years since the release of Stephanie Meyer's hit vampire series, The Twilight Saga, but the frenzy surrounding the books - and the movies - show no sign of abating. With the June 30 release date of the movie adaptation of Eclipse, we decided to take a look at Meyer's much loved characters, Bella Swan and Edward Cullen and see whether these fictional characters are in actual fact perfect for one another.

Bella, the brainy Virgo with no sense of self-preservation
Born on the 13 September 1987, Bella is an intelligent and down to earth Virgo.  Her incredibly shy and modest (sometimes too modest) nature often results in her being awkward in social situations, which is why she  tries to avoid being in the spotlight. (Quite a hard feat considering the interest by the many the boys in the Twilight books have expressed towards her)

As a Virgo, she's practical and loves to put her own needs above others. Her practicality shows itself in the fact that she doesn't like spending money on luxurious items and hates it when others do. (She specifically tells Edward not to spend any money on her for her birthday)

She's not as critical as Virgos usually tend to be, but she does tend to err on the side of being self-critical  and self-doubting -a feat which yet again shows itself in the fact that she spends a lot of time doubting that Edward could possibly love someone as 'ordinary' as her.

She has a strong sense of responsibility, especially with regard to family and friends - and selflessly puts their needs above her own and many a time risks her life because of that innate sense of responsibility. (It was essentially because of this that nearly got her killed in the first instalment of the Twilight saga).

Unfortunately, Virgos also have a tendency to fall into depression to the point of immobilisation and Bella proved to be no exception to the rule.

Her depressive episode in New Moon almost had us convinced that she wasn't about to pull through, but luckily, with the help of werewolf, Jacob Black and the return of Edward (or rather, her being given the task of rescuing Edward from doing something incredibly stupid) all aided in getting her back on her feet in no time.

Edward, the brooding Gemini
Geminis, by their very nature are multi-faceted, intelligent and logical with a lot of energy to spend. They are incredibly inquisitive, quick to absorb information and like to keep busy. As the only single Cullen (before Bella), Edward, who was born on the 20 June 1901, certainly fits this description.

When the humans are sleeping he spends his hours reading books, studying languages and perfecting his music skills. He's smart, dazzling and charming - a trademark Gemini through and through. His fascination with Bella is obvious as is his curiosity about her (he does, after all confess that he liked to watch her sleep).

As dazzling as he is, he showcases that, like most Gemini's, he's can easily switch moods - which is where all the brooding angsty bits come in. His protectiveness over Bella often leads him to overanalyse and overreact to situations where Bella seems to be in danger, but his love for her shows no bounds - even going so far as to allow her to chose her own happiness.

So, do they work as a couple?
In fiction, they may certainly have their ending, but would they work if it they were a reality? (Yes, I know Kristen and Rob are a couple, but we're talking Bella and Edward here)

According to one astrologist, if they base their relationship purely on an emotional level, the relationship could be successful as they would each both lean on the other for the support that they crave.

The relationship wouldn't be without its challenges though as Virgo women need to feel the familiarity of her lover's physical affection where as Gemini's by default are not men who are known for familiar fields. His constant desire for change will eventually become a deciding factor in the relationship - and provided these issues could be worked through, a long-term relationship doesn't seem plausible.

But, this is after all fiction, and hey, if Bella and Edward get to be together in the books, then who are astrologists that they can decide who gets to be together or not?
