Anita Blake: Vampire hunter series

accreditation
Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series Laurell K Hamilton (Headline)
I've read Anne Rice, Twilight, J.R Ward and even some Sherrilyn Kenyon (not recommended) so I pretty much thought I know cheesy  vampire porn in all its forms. (Ja, ja I KNOW Anne Rice isn't exactly cheesy. Settle down, okay?)

The Anita Blake novels surprised me.

They are much darker than your standard vampire chick lit. Anita lives in a parallel world where vampires, wereanimals, ghosts, zombies etc are standard fare. She's a necromancer who raises the dead – for money. And as she becomes deeper and deeper embroiled in the “monster” world, she starts believing that she is the biggest monster of all. She has a point - this tiny half Mexican 27 year-old kills without mercy or compunction.

She supplements her metaphysical powers with mad fighting and gun skills. When things get really rough she sometimes calls in the help of sociopath and bounty hunter deluxe, Edward. The violence in the books is quite graphic and brutal and gets worse as the series progresses. The wereanimals can regrow limbs and appendages so it sometimes gets rather gory.

And the sex!

Anita starts out as a conservative, almost prudish middle-American girl who finds herself in love with an incubus vampire and a dominant werewolf. And a submissive wereleopard whose totally into bondage, and another vampire whose bite is orgasmic and another wereanimal who is called by her power and some S&M and groupsex and… well, you get the picture. Her descent into the more lascivious side of her nature (all explained practically - hee hee - and in some detail) is a large part of the series. Actually, from about the 6th book the plot centers almost completely around the reasons Anita must have sex.

It’s over the top, it’s indulgent, it’s fantastical. In short, it is total trash, but fun to read.
