Meet Abeeda Ariefdin, or Beeda as she is called by family. She is a Muslim woman struggling to find her place within an Islamic framework. She prays, fasts, wears the hijaab. But she has her secrets, her sins as she calls them.
Abeeda is a faithful Muslim, mother to four sons, the ex-wife of a cheating ex-husband, a sister, daughter, neighbour, employer and friend. But she is also a gambling addict, has a son who is dying of Aids and is living with the guilt of a long-term affair with her brother-in-law, Imran.
The conflict for Beeda is not so much the loss of money, but rather the guilt and shame associated with being a Muslim woman in a casino. The pain of her son's imminent death sends her to the casino, to visit her "aunty". It's an escape from the rumours about her son.
Abeeda eventually tries to conquer her addiction, but it might be too late...
Confessions of a Gambler is a gripping novel that explores a woman's battle with her religion, addiction and relationships. A must-read for anybody.
