Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier (Tor Books)
Daughter of the Forest is a magical little tale about love, integrity, loyalty, and family.
Juliet Marillier based this book on the fairytale about the girl with 6 brothers who are turned into swans by their evil stepmother. To reverse the curse, the girl must weave jackets from stinging nettles – an agonising task to be done in utter silence.
Sorcha and her brothers live in an old Ireland that is changing fast with the Briton, Saxon and Pict invasions. The old ways are threatened and they are left to basically fend for themselves after their mother’s death.
After Sorcha’s brothers are turned into swans she is kidnapped by Britons and kept as prisoner while she completes her daunting task to save her brothers. But is the Briton lord really the monster her countrymen fear?
And why do his strength and his kindness confuse her so?
I thought this book was intended for younger readers, but having read it, I think people of all ages will be charmed by this lovely, intricate story.
