Desperation

Desperation by Stephen King (Hodder Paperback)
I'm not really a horror fan. As a rule I don't enjoy pain and fear either directly, or vicariously. So I started reading King's Desperation because I couldn't find anything else.

And then I continued because the setting reminded me of road trips through the Karoo. Poignant, but creepy as all hell. And then I kept reading because I couldn't force myself to put it down.

Desperation, Nevada is a small mining town in the middle of nowhere that has been taken over by a deep, dark mysterious force. A bunch of unrelated characters are lured into the town, which now resembles a nightmare from which there is no escape.

Unlike many other horror books and movies, King manages to get the reader to care for the protagonists. You are rooting for them on such a deep level that every small victory is a cathartic experience.

The creepy setting, terrifying language nuances and perceived fear really scared the living daylights out of me. I kept reading late into the night, too terrified to sleep and too intrigued to read anything else.

The message of redemption, of second chances and that good can only triumph over evil if you sometimes have to make hard decisions is what clinched it for me. Even though I didn't really agree 100% with the spiritual message.
