Goddess of the Rose

Goddess of the Rose by P.C. Cast (Piatkus)
Mikado comes from a family that has kept their roses healthy by sacrificing drops of their blood to their flowers. Aside from this odd quirk, Mikado has always considered herself to be normal.

Well, normal as normal can be, until she accidentally summons the goddess Hecate, and ends up in the Realm of the Rose - a beautiful, but strangely familiar, otherworldly place.

The reason the place is so familiar?

Turns out that Mikki is a high priestess, one of the many who have been destined to look after and sacrifice their lives in order to ensure that the roses survive.

But, there's something more waiting in the realm. In a moment of heated fury, Hecate cursed her guardian beast (who really is a humanoid minotaur) with a slumber that would last until the next high priestess (Mikado), invoked the presence of the high goddess.

Now, the beast is awake, and though he frightens her at first, Mikado can't help but become intrigued the very male essence he exudes.

But time is running out , the roses are sick and the realm needs healing. And in order to save them all, Mikado will have to give up all she's grown to love, by sacrificing her life-giving blood and herself.

I don't know about you, but out of all the fairytales that I've read throughout the years, Beauty and the Beast has always been (and still is) my favourite.

Having never read any of P.C. Cast's previous books (yes, I have yet to read her and Kristin's House of Night book series), I wasn't quite sure what to expect from her Goddess Summoning series.

Which is why, when I first came across Goddess of the Rose and discovered that it's a retelling of my old childhood favourite, I simply had to read it.

And found myself, much to my surprise, really enjoying it.

PC Cast certainly has a way with building inventive, mythical worlds that draw you in, even though, at the back of your mind, you are fully aware that the storyline and dialogue actually border on being cheesy.

There's a hypnotic dreaminess that lulls you into a world filled with magic spells and dream weavers and one that makes you forget that you first have to trod through a bit of a back story in order to get to the real heart and action of the novel.

When you finally do get beyond what I like to think of as a very long introduction, the action and romance leaves you turning each page with an almost frantic anticipation.

Paranormal romance lovers? If you're looking for a book filled with plenty of simmering tension and romance, you'll definitely find all that and more here. There are some scenes that seriously made me blush just reading it, hints of a kink factor barely bubbling beneath the surface.

For those who are used to a PC Cast who writes for a younger audience, you better make sure that you throw all your preconceived notions out of the window.  Her books for adults are hot.

I really have to applaud her for incorporating a feminist slant in each of the Goddess Summoning series books I've read so far. Goddess of the Rose has a strong, modern and highly independent female character in Mikado.

Bold, brave and always up for doing something even when she's afraid, she's the kind of character that many of us strive to be. Confident in herself, her sexuality and her destiny. Yes, probably a bit unrealistic, but isn't it secretly what many of us strive to be?

And what would fiction be without a character who makes us want to be her for more than just a little while?

Read it for the mythology, the romance, the magic, and the bucket loads of sexiness.  It's fun , I promise.
