Inés of My Soul

Inés of my soul by Isabel Allende (HarperPerennial)
Having read and loved The House of Spirits(possibly my favourite book of all time), I've come to expect only the best from Isabel Allende.

She is, I believe, one of the few authors whose descriptive, multilayered and hypnotic prose make the reader feel as if they were actually living and experiencing the heart and soul of her stories instead of just merely reading it.

And with this book, it's no different.

Inés of my soul chronicles the life of real life sixteenth-century heroine, Doña Inés Suárez, who along with her lover, Pedro de Valdivia travels to Chile to found the city of Santiago.

Married at a young age to a womanising and adventure-seeking man, Ines soon discovers that life in Spain is not cut out for her. She decides to journey to the New World (The untamed South American lands) in pursuit of her husband, whose quest for treasure ultimately leads to his demise.

Upon hearing about Juan (her husband's death), Ines decides to remain in Peru, where shortly afterwards she finds herself swept away by the bold, dashing and courageous Don Pedro de Valdivia, conquistador and loyal field marshal to Francisco Pizarro.

Together, in their efforts to form a new city in South America, they wage a bloody and ruthless war against the South American Indians – a war that would last for more years than they could have imagined.

Based on documented events of Ines Suarez's life, Isabel Allende effortlessly crafts together a tale of love, passion, deceit, tragedy and warfare. While I don't think Ines of my soul will ever reach the same heights that The House of Spirits did, Allende's writing is exquisitely descriptive and will still leave you wanting more.

It's a must have for fans of her work.
