My Sister's Keeper

accreditation
My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (Hodder Paperback)
So the movie, starring Cameron Diaz, hit the big screen recently, but because I’m such a Picoult fan, I refused to see it until I’d read the book first.

My Sister’s Keeper is a heartbreaking, yet touching tale about a family whose bond is shaken by a sudden lawsuit, filed by the youngest of three siblings, Anna Fitzgerald.

Anna’s birth was a planned one. So much so that her parents even went to the lengths of having her genetically engineered, with one purpose in mind – to be a donor for her older sister Kate, who was diagnosed with cancer at a very early age.

Now in her early teens, Anna decides that she’s had enough of the endless poking and prodding and as a result, an ensuing battle for the 'rights of her own body' begins.

The plot follows the Fitzgerald struggle – Anna's motives, her parents' logic, her brother's resentment and Kate's battle to stay alive. Like many of Picoults books, My Sister's Keeper, calls into question the issue of morality, good parenting, family ties and right vs. wrong.

An emotional read with an unexpected twist that leaves you thinking for a while after you’ve turned the final page…
