Sidekick by Adeline Radloff (Tafelberg Publishers Ltd)
Adeline is a good friend of mine, so when I was handed her book, I was excited... but my stomach also dropped to my shoes. What if I hated it? I hate lying and I am very, very bad at it. And if I had written a whole book and one of my friends thought it sucked, I don’t think I’d get over it that easily.
Luckily, all this pre-worrying was for naught... Sidekick is brilliant. Thank God.
Katie Holmes (and yes, she knows the name is already ‘in play’) is 17 and lives with her adoptive mother, the housekeeper of the gorgeous and gorgeously named Finn O’Reilly, who is an unlikely superhero, with the ability to stop time, and then move about in the untime he creates.
Katie is his side kick in that she is the only one who stays unfrozen during these “time outs” (although she does get very cold), and she finds herself in some pretty interesting situations, with intriguing amounts of power over others.
She is also funny, insecure and almost always rueful... my best kind of teenage girl. The story clips along well, is chockers with action and real teen issues, and leaves you wishing for an extra couple of chapters or at least a list of “other books in this series.”
I read it, my husband read it, my 12year-old son read it – and we all could congratulate Adeline without having to look shifty.
That’s quite an achievement.
