The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks (Sphere)
A Bend in the Road set off my love affair with Sparks’ work and I remember the ‘event’ like it was just yesterday.
My best friend’s mother kept raving about how she “could not put the book down,” and how – on more than one occasion – it brought her “to tears” and so on and so on.
Of course, my curiosity got the better of me and once it passed each of her two daughter’s hands, I FINALLY got my chance to peruse it.
I started the novel the Friday evening, and I turned the last page the following afternoon. It was that good. That interesting. To me, at least.
The Notebook and A Walk to Remember – both of which were later adapted to big screen movies – followed and these, too, were right up my alley.
Next up, The Best of Me, which I obviously also could not put down.
The book, in a nutshell, tells the tale of two lovers who were torn apart by circumstance, and then reunited again some 25 years down the line.
I like Sparks’ attention to detail. He puts so much effort into each character that one can’t help but feel a connection. Amanda and Dawson's relationship, the tragedy, the drama, the love, the grief... it all hit home for me.
I smiled with myself, I welled up... it’s a read that truly pulls at your heart strings!
