The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani (Headline Publishing group)
Set in rural Iran, a young girl approaching the age of marriage finds that life has different plans for her after a blazing comet proves to be a bad omen.

Following the death of her father, she and her mother travel to the city where they are taken in as servants by her uncle, a well sought-after carpet designer, and his cold-blooded wife.

Despite being treated like servants in the household, the future looks promising for both mother and daughter who now have a roof over their heads and enough food to eat.

Young, impetuous and impulsive she may be, she is also a talented but amateur carpet designer who quickly sees the benefit of asking her uncle's help in tutoring and mentoring her in her quest to develop her talent.

Of course it's not long before her headstrong and impulsive nature gets the better of her; and after one act too rash to forgive, she's forced into a making an unwelcome sacrifice.

As things worsen for her and her mother, our nameless heroine has to rely on her artistic skill and creativity to build a new life and pave a way for herself in an uncompromising world.

Luminous, evocative and seductive in its descriptiveness, The Blood of flowers takes you on a forget-me-not visual journey that is sure to remain with you long after you've read the book.
