The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan (Vintage)
I love Ian McEwan. I love, love, LOVE him. And after recently reading a lifetime's worth of vampire porn I decided I should probably read something written by a grown-up for a change. So, this weekend I reread The Cement Garden.

*Note to self – you are an idiot.

Why? Because The Cement Garden is a fantastic book that everyone should read once: four children are left parentless and in order to avoid childcare they hide their mother's body in the cellar in a trunk filled with cement. And then they have sex with each other.

But more than once? Sho. Silly Lili.

On the plus side, McEwan writes so well that you can read his books 10 times if you wanted to. His prose is simple, evocative and incredibly intense. Every word is carefully chosen and he forces the reader to become completely, personally immersed in his work.

The Cement Garden, although written with immense humanity, skill and tenderness is not for sissies, but if you want to read a true master at work, go for it. You won't be disappointed. But you might be rocked to your very core.
