The Mall by S.L Grey (Corvus)
Harking from someone who doesn’t read South African fiction (I read to escape), I was a bit annoyed to discover that the cool new book in my bag that I was racing home to read was actually written by a South African.
Well, I unashamedly eat my words! Wow! What an awesome read!
First, a heads-up: this book is definitely not for the sensitive, the squeamish or the nervous. But, if you want an electric read that will jolt you upright and stretch you; and if you are looking for an intelligent, alternative and totally riveting read, then you should look no further than The Mall.
Stepford Wives-meets 28 Days Later, this is a contemporary horror set in the most mundane (or horrific, depending on your point of view) of places: the shopping centre.
Enter Rhoda and Dan, 2 disillusioned, beaten-down people, who meet by chance in the mall.
Rhoda, desperate for a coke fix (white powder, not of the fizzy black liquid variety) has brought her babysitting charge with her, planning to score and rush home. Unfortunately the child wanders off and desperate to find him, Rhoda accepts help from Ben, an anxious and bored bookseller.
Together they embark on a journey deep into the hidden tunnels and corridors of the mall and discover something akin to a circle of hell. Just when they emerge back into the mall, safe and alive, the relief evident in their panting breaths, the nightmare truly begins.
Where you enjoy this book as a contemporary, satirical take on shopping malls, or as a clever violent romp through your darkest fears, either way, you can be assured that shopping will never be the same again.
