The Solitaire Mystery

The Solitaire Mystery by Jostein Gaarder (Phoenix Mass Market)
More than just a philosophical book, The Solitaire Mystery brings imagination, spirit, soul and the philosophical essence of being into a marvelous tome exploding with mystery and magic.

Twelve-year-old Hans Thomas travels with his father from Norway to Greece in a quest to search for his wayward mother. Along the way he meets an intriguing dwarf (not just any dwarf mind you – a magical one) who hands him a magnifying glass which he uses when he's presented with a miniature book, hidden in a sticky bun, by a kindly old baker man.

Between sightseeing and philosophising with his father, Hans finds himself sneaking peaks into a book where a strange story of a shipwrecked sailor and his bizarre game of solitaire (somehow interlinked with Hans's own life) slowly unfolds.

Alternating between his world and the world in the sticky bun book (for that is what it's called), an allegory of philosophy and fantastical elements collide, bringing forth a world where magical islands, sparkling rainbow sodas and talking cards (There is after all, a good reason why this book is called The Solitaire Mystery) are the order of the day.

What makes this book such a fantastic read, is the author's remarkable ability to take on the complicated subject of philosophy and transform it into a journey of unpredictable, enchanting and absorbing fun.

One of my favourite reads of all time, The Solitaire Mystery is an open door to a fantastical world where all inquisitive and searching souls are welcome..
