Wolf Hall

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (Fourth Estate)
As the associate of the great Cardinal Wolsey, low-born blacksmith's son Thomas Cromwell is exposed to the highest echelons of power in Henry VIIIth’s England. But as the cardinal’s power fades, Cromwell is drawn into an even more complex web of political and personal relationships.

Central to the drama is the king’s desire to shed his marriage to his queen Katherine, in order to try for an heir with his new young love, Anne Boleyn. Driven by ambition, Anne’s family try to entice Cromwell to support their cause. How he fights to keep his integrity – and his head – makes for an interesting new perspective on the much-told history of England’s best-known monarch.

Hilary Mantel’s writing is subtle and skilled, a worthy winner of the 2009 Man Booker prize, and a finalist in the Orange prize and Exclusive Books’ Boeke prize. Through small daily interactions and subtle machinations, her power-hungry characters do a destructive dance. Their only aim: to further their own interests, no matter what the effect on the country and its people.

Wolf Hall is not a quick read, but its appeal lies in becoming lost and embroiled in the story and characters.  It’s the kind of book where you lift your head and realise an hour has gone by, but can’t resist reading just a little more.
