5 gorgeous trends for the ultimate wedding

The latest issue of Fairlady Bride is currently out on the shelves. Liesl Robertson, editor of the magazine, gives us a sneak peek into some of the best bridal trends for the perfect wedding day.

I have a confession to make: I plan a wedding every year.

I realise that makes me sound like Elizabeth Taylor, but hear me out. When you’re surrounded by as many beautiful things as we are during the process of putting together a wedding mag, you can’t help but make little mental notes along the way.

I find myself thinking, ‘Oooh, nice cake, that’s the one I would have chosen’, and ‘That is definitely the dress I would wear’.

Basically, I have a dress picked out, a cake, a venue, shoes, a colour scheme… Sure, it doesn’t actually happen – I’m pretty sure my husband would object to a yearly vow renewal – but a girl can dream, right? Also, if anyone needs a wedding, all planned out (minus the financing, unfortunately), you know where to find me.

Without sounding too much like Julie Andrews, here are a few of my favourite things from this year’s issue:

1. Tereza’s styling

We all LOVED this look – from the Twenties-inspired faux bob with the red lip (Don’t you think it makes her look just like Taylor Swift?) to the open-back beaded dress from Casey Jeanne… Sigh.

2. Fun cakes

Back in the day you had very few options when it came to wedding cakes: it was a tall, tiered fruitcake or nothing. And then you were also supposed to save the top tier and eat it on your anniversary. (Mmm, year-old cake.)

I love that wedding cakes can be any shape and size now – from the dramatic marbled black cake we have on page 85 (of our latest Fairlady Bride issue) to this mini pastel Astronomica cake with pink meringues on top – anything goes!

3. Floral installations

You can spot florist Heike le Cordeur’s work from a mile away – mostly because it usually involves flowers dripping from the ceilings! This beautiful archway from real bride Raphaella’s wedding makes such a statement.

4. Metallic crowns

When I was planning my own wedding a few years back, I really wanted to include rose gold in the colour scheme. I scoured the earth for rose gold things: lanterns, candles, jewellery, anything really, but no luck – in the end I had some earrings made.

Two months after the wedding, however, it felt like all the shops had had a meeting and decided to just do away with any other colour – rose gold was EVERYWHERE.

So now I live vicariously! With this rose-gold hued floral wreath, you don’t have to decide between wearing flowers in your hair and donning something sparkly – it ticks both boxes. (Any thoughts on whether I could get away with wearing this to work?)

5. Shoes of Prey

Real bride Tarryn opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me with this one: there is a site (deep breath) where you can custom-make your shoes, right down to the kind of straps and the height of the heel. And they do glitter. Goodbye, salary.
