We see so many articles focusing on what extra make-up women should have in their emergency bridal kits, but while that is definitely a factor to consider, what’s often forgotten in the whole hoo-haa of becoming “the bride who dazzled them all”, are the more practical, everyday things that could go wrong.
In light of this, we’ve compiled a list of items we think every bride-to-be should have nearby on her wedding day.
1. Pads or tampons
I don’t know about you, but one of my biggest fears is that my wedding will fall on a day when my period decides to show up unannounced.
Most of us do know when our menstrual cycles are due (ok, ok, I use a period-tracking app to help me), but there are times when that time of the month can really catch you off guard, or you can just experience some spotting. This is exactly why you should always keep sanitary towels or tampons on you.
The last thing you want is blood stains on your wedding.
2. Medication
From headache tablets to anti-nausea pills, muscle ointments and stomach-ailing treatments, medication is another on our list of most important items to include in your emergency kit. Whatever kind of medicine you require, always make sure to not only have it in your kit, but to take it out at your reception and keep it within reaching distance.
3. Mini sewing kit
Odds are that you could walk into a corner with a sharp edge or someone could accidentally step on your dress (resulting in rips and tears). It might not happen, but it’s always better to have a mend-it kit on you in the event of a fashion disaster. Wardrobe malfunctions happen and while you won’t be able to fix a gaping hole, you will be able to quickly mend a broken strap or a loose seam.
Handy tip: If you’ve had your dress made and there’s still throwaway pieces of material left, ask your dressmaker if you can keep some. That way you could utilise it to cover up patches that require more than a quick stitch-up.
4. Stain removal quick fixes
Unless you can actually find some space to carry your entire itinerary of household cleaning products with you, quick fixes are the way to go. Think chalk (choose the colour closest to your dress), baby powder, cotton wool, double-sided tape, superglue and wet wipes. Oh, and don’t wipe. Dab, dab, dab. Dabbing is your friend.
5. Breath mints / mouth wash
You’re going to be walking around chatting to guests, posing for photos and most importantly, you’re going to be intimate with your partner and in close proximity to basically everyone involved in making your wedding day special.
Better make sure your breath is fresher than the sea’s breeze, especially If your menu also consists of dishes renowned for rendering people absolutely breathless for all the wrong reasons.
6. Extra pair of shoes
I don’t know about you, but I can almost never wear high heels for long periods of time. Well, unless I know I’m going to an event where I’ll be spending most of my time sitting. Weddings, unfortunately, are punctuated by posing for photos, dancing and walking around from table to table to spend a little time with your guests.
And that means lots of walking. In. High. Heels. If that’s not reason enough to take a spare pair of flats with you, then I don’t know what is.
7. Bobby pins
For when your hair decides to misbehave. Which, it inevitably usually will. Also, because weather is unpredictable and you might find yourself in the midst of a windstorm that has zero respect for your beautiful up-do.
