The bratty bride

accreditation
Whenever I think back to my wedding, I have a pang of sympathy for my mother.

I was a truly DREADFUL bride. Not only was I barely out of my teens, and still displaying a truly horrendous sulky streak (“WhatEVER.”), but I am a dreadfully unclothes-orientated person, who hates details.

I didn’t buy a single bridal magazine. I didn’t browse through a single website. I bought my dress in 20 minutes and didn’t ever find shoes, so my mother had to buy TWO pairs for me to choose from on the day.

I know. I am most dreadfully embarrassed thinking back on it. Especially since my mother really pulled out all the stops... beautiful wine farm venue bedecked with flowers, loved ones and great food...  and womanfully refrained from giving me a good slapping.

It was a very funny wedding, in two languages. Andreas gave a speech I didn’t understand. My father gave a speech none of Dreas’s family understood, which is just as well, because a lot of it was based on how surprised he was that someone like Andreas wanted to marry his foul-mouthed, heavy-drinking daughter.

When in my cups, usually after long dinner parties, I’ll haul out the white embossed album my mom presented me with and let our guests laugh at how incredibly young and weirded-out Andreas and I both look.

So I’m always constantly amazed by how elegant, beautiful and poised our Women24 brides look in their photos. (I mean, have you SEEN our 2009 Bride of the Year, Jen? She’s ridiculously beautiful.)

I secretly spend a lot of time poring over your wedding galleries, because the happiness radiating from them cheers me up no end. Which is why I want to implore you to send in your own wedding photos if you got married in 2010, or bother your friends to do so, or just share your thoughts on weddings generally. Not only are there prizes to be won, and monthly and weekly winners (check ‘em out on Facebook... I am looking at you, Mbali!)... but you’ll be giving women ideas, inspiration and random warm feelings.
