Do you have a witness?

According to South African Family law you’re legally required to have at least two witnesses who are eighteen years or older. This is one of the first things to consider because without witnesses you won’t be able to continue with the process of getting into a civil marriage. You’re free to choose anyone from both your parents, or your maid of honor and best man.

Sign your own name

We know how changing your surname can be exciting for some. But, put some brakes on that as on the day that you sign you’ll still use your maiden name. Up until you receive your marriage certificate, which according to the Department Home Affairs can take up to two weeks.

Have a table set up

This is a big moment for you as a couple and both families as well so make sure you’ve prepared for it. So have a table set up with chairs and pens enough for you, your husband and the witnesses.

Prepare a playlist

There’s nothing as that awkward silence while the priest is officiating the process and your guest are watching with admiration. Have a live band or a couple of romantic songs playing to complete the whole procedure.

Take a seat

Some wedding gowns are not the most comfortable so to avoid having your guests take pictures of you frowning. Take a seat, it’ll be more relaxing.

Don’t face away from your guests

As much as this is more special for you two, your guests are still a great part of the ceremony so don’t face away from them. Include them in the process as much as you can.

Sign away

Both you and your witnesses will sign a duly marriage certficate which will serve as proof of your marriage existance until you receive the official document.
