#W24Tastemaker Nicole Dirks shares her beautiful wedding story with us.

How we met:

“We fell in love, right by the ocean. Made all our plans, down on the sand” - lyrics by The Coasts.

This pretty much sums up the story of our romance.

We met at an overnight lagoon camping birthday celebration. Matt graciously offered us girls a lift to the camp site – which was about an hour away - and off we went in his little ford on our mini road trip.

Now every road trip has to have music right? Well, let's just say Matt's taste in music peaked my interest.

Fast forward to the evening and we were full on discussing the new release by Empire of Sun, "Standing on the Shore" when we both realised we had the same taste in music.

He said he liked my eyes and I liked his smile, and so it began: our forever story.

Four years later we were headed for the long haul. Is he the one? Absolutely. Does he make me happier than I ever imagined I could be? Absolutely.

How he proposed:

We had just purchased our home together and were excited to invite our family to view our house for the first time.

During the long waiting process, we arranged to retrieve the keys and show everyone around, but when we arrived at the house Matt quickly went to water the lawn.

So there I was sitting with my mom, when he called me to the backyard and once I took the corner, there he was... down on one knee with a ring in hand, asking me to spend the rest of my life with him.

Matthew has such a way with speeches. I completely forget what he says but I always remember the feeling - the same happened when he said 'I love you' for the first time.

To be honest, I didn’t even say yes - I just laughed, grabbed the ring and put it on my finger before finally mouthing 'yes' after asking if he was serious.

Date of Wedding: 4th of March 2017

We had one of my best friends officiate our rather nontraditional ceremony, which made it so much more special as the entire ceremony was exactly what we wanted.

I did not intend to have a theme but somehow it manifested itself in Travel.

And after being endlessly teased about our wedding being two hours away we decided to just go with that as our theme.

We had our “Save The Dates” made as post cards, our invitations as passports and a map to help guests find their seat at our dream travel destination themed table numbers.

We marked Cape Town as our designated table.

I will never be able to thank my family for helping with the biggest day of my life.

From the flowers, to the prints and set up, they truly made my vision a reality. Who knew DIY could work so well! Thank you family.
