How we met:

The year was 2007 and we were both in high school. We are both from Pietermaritzburg and over the weekends, it was customary for the girls of the surrounding girls’ schools to go and watch rugby at one of the boys’ schools.

This was one such Saturday where my friend and I went to watch rugby at the boys’ school nearby.

As I was walking about I bumped into one of my neighbours who attended the school and he was walking with Sno (Sinovuyo).

We were officially introduced then. I say officially because, it being a small town, I had some idea of who he was.

I do not remember when or how an exchange of numbers took place, but what I do remember is us chatting on Mxit for a few months after that, where a friendship of sorts budded.

He was in matric at the time and I was in grade 11. Nothing manifested from our texting and by the time the end of the year came, there was no more texting.

The next year he left for university in Cape Town and I headed to matric; continuing on to university in Pretoria thereafter. Fast-forward to November 2012, I received a call from an unfamiliar number and when I answered I couldn’t believe that it was Sno on the other end.

My number had not changed since matric and he was randomly scrolling through his contacts on his phone looking to find someone to use his free minutes on and that person was me.

It had been 5 years since we had last spoken, but we had such a great conversation for about an hour.

From that day, we would Whatsapp from time to time. Soon, it became weekly messages and included the occasional phone call.

In May 2013, my sister was getting married in Pietermaritzburg. I was working in Pretoria and Sno was working in Cape Town.

I mentioned to him that I would be in Pietermaritzburg for the wedding that coming weekend and he said that he would also be in Pietermaritzburg for his high school reunion. This was perfect for a meeting.

Zulu weddings are usually over 2 days and I invited him to day 2 of the proceedings which is much more informal and somewhat of a free for all to attend. Long story short, that day we saw each other face to face for the first time in 6 years. We started dating a month later.

How he proposed:

We were both living in Gauteng at the time and it was our one year dating anniversary. The plan was to take a day trip to Magaliesberg to have massages and a lovely lunch.

I was looking forward to our day and when I arrived at Sno’s place early in the morning ready to go, he tells me there has been a change of plan. The new plan was to take a trip to a private game lodge called Kilima in Limpopo. It was honestly so stunning there.

We headed to the lodge’s restaurant and were ready to order some food. When we sat down one of the waiters came to our table and said that we couldn’t sit there as it was not our table. We got up and followed him to our new table.

At the one end the restaurant, the waiter then opened doors to a private room with a table setting for two. The room had candles and petals on the floor.

What a night. As we ate, I didn’t suspect anything at all because it was our anniversary.

Once we were done, I asked for Sno to get the bill and as he was leaving to get the waiter I suddenly saw him down on one knee holding a box with a beautiful diamond ring in it. I was so shocked because I really didn’t expect it.

He was so nervous and me taking my time to give him an answer didn’t help much. After a few tears, I finally said yes!

We got married on the 30th January 2016. We really wanted our wedding to reflect us as a couple. We are both from KZN so getting married there was not even under discussion.

We really wanted to keep it simple and we love nature. We knew we wanted a rustic theme in a setting that has a beautiful outdoor space.

The first venue we visited fit that description beautifully. We visited numerous other venues before we made our final decision but the winner was the first venue we laid our eyes on.

Our ceremony was held in the beautiful Methodist Church I grew up going to in Pietermaritzburg. Our reception was on a sugarcane farm in Tala Valley with panoramic, green views.

Sno and I picked all of the suppliers ourselves and were very hands-on throughout the entire process.

He also allowed me to pick the colour palette for the day and I went for a peach, blush, white, neutral with some gold, rose gold and copper for the day.

I loved the soft colours and the elegance it brought to the day. The day was more blush and pink than peach, but it was so beautiful.

I also fell in love with the emerging trend of having a colourful wedding dress. I opted for a peachy blush for mine.

Sno also got creative with the guys - they wore wooden bowties on the day.
