7 Quick tips for a more organised life

So you’ve decided that a bit more organisation in your life wouldn’t go amiss, but you aren’t quite sure where to start?

Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Do one thing at a time

While many of us may think that we’ve got multitasking down to a T (attention ladies…) the fact is that doing one task at a time is far more productive than trying to accomplish two or three at the same time.

Checking your email (or Facebook) every ten minutes, working on a report and doing your monthly targets all at the same time might make you feel super productive, but in reality you’re just more likely to make a mistake than if you’d done each task separately.

2. Keep ONE list of tasks

Having a to do list is an absolute must for any person trying to achieve organisation, but you’ve got to be sure you’re only working from one list. It’s easy to make a note here and jot something down there but if your notes aren’t all in one place you’ll end up spending more time putting your lists together and sorting them out than actually working.

3. Keep everything in its place

If you want to get organised you have to actually GET organised. This means decluttering and rearranging your things and then being strict about how neat you want to keep your surroundings.

4. Learn to say no

Being assertive is paramount to maintaining an organised lifestyle, because let’s face it, there’s no way you can be organised if you have to keep stopping your own work to help other people finish theirs.

5. Colour code

Colour coding is a great way of keeping organised as it gives you an at-a-glance view of what needs doing and when it needs doing by. For paperwork both in the office and at home use red, yellow and green folders for things that are urgent, less urgent and still okay (or daily, weekly, monthly etc.).

6. Learn to delegate

If you can identify the tasks that you’re able to assign to other people (like folding the washing and drying the dishes, or collating the reports and collecting the printing) you’ll be able to free up a lot more time to focus on the more important matters on your agenda and not have to worry about added stress affecting your oganisation.

7. Control yourself

All the things that distract you on a daily basis, like emails, extra work from colleagues and a disorganised, cluttered office, are actually under your control. If checking your emails and Facebook notifications is taking up your time, simply stop. Don’t accept more work than you can handle and be determined when it comes to the level of organisation you’d like in your office.
