1. How did you get into your line of work?
I have a qualification in Bcom Industrial Psychology and I pursued an HR career which led me to Payroll as they interrelate.
2. What's the first thing you do when you get into the office?
I check emails for anything that needs to be attended to urgently, and then I start data capturing the employees’ input such as overtime, leave taken, travel and subsistence expenses, loan deductions etc.
3. To do my job, you have to love…
Working with numbers and be people-oriented because salaries do affect peoples’ emotions.
4. I spend most of my day…
At work, data capturing and tending to employee queries.
5. What is the worst aspect of your job?
I think the biggest challenge about my job is double-checking employees’ overtime as I have on average about 1,250 employees to monitor. One must pay great attention to detail before distributing payslips.
6. What is the best thing about your job?
Having the ability and skill to assist the employees satisfactorily, and keeping them happy.
7. The next job up from yours is…
Compensation Management which falls under HR management.
8. What's the one thing no-one knows about your job?
Most people do not know that we deal with people on a daily basis and we are expected to have solutions to any of their queries.
9. What is the starting salary of someone in your job?
At our company it is R104K per annum. (Ed's note: But this is just an entry-level amount)
