If you're someone who is dissatisfied with or unchallenged by your current role and you're considering cutting the cord, keep in mind the following: how you quit your job can be just as important as when you do so and where you go next. Here are three key steps to keep in mind as you take your leave gracefully:
1. Be positive. When you entered your job, it was – or at least seemed – fabulous, so now that you're leaving end off on a high note by remembering all the valuable lessons that you learned while you were in your job.
When you give the news to your boss, avoid ranting and raving. You may feel better but it won't help your career. Rather focus on the reasons why you're looking for a new opportunity – whether it be joining another company or travelling abroad. Keep your comments positive. If you do have constructive feedback, schedule a separate meeting to discuss it – this time should be used to help the team or organization work better going forward.
2. Find your replacement. Don't leave your team or manager in the lurch. Do what you can to find someone qualified. Offer to stay on to help that person transition into the position – chat to your friends, touch base with old colleagues or check your LinkedIn connections for options. This way, you'll also avoid feeling guilty when you move on.
3. Keep in touch. Don't sever all ties with the company even if you had a bad experience. Former colleagues and managers may be assets to you in the future.
Who knows where you'll end up after this new job? The world is mobile. Keep your network of trusted friends, colleagues and advisors warm. If you've done good work, built real or meaningful relationships, or even just gained a valuable skillset, don't throw away all of that experience by pretending these years of your life didn't exist.
