Job hunting tips

Successful job-hunting must be carried out with a precise plan and sound tactics, so try these tips:

CV Savvy

Posting your CV on a zillion websites is no guarantee of success. While it certainly is an important tool, it shouldn't be your only one.

Network your way through
Many jobs aren't advertised in the press or on the web, but rather internally and through word of mouth, which is why networking is so critical. Let everybody you come into contact with know you're looking for a job. Formulate a one-minute description of what you do so people get a clear idea of what you're looking for.

Covering letter
Make sure you have a covering letter with your CV, modified specifically for the position and company you're applying to. No employer needs to know your first job was licking stamps at your mom's office, so only list the positions which indicate you have the skills to do the job you're applying for.

Recruitment agency
Treat the recruitment agency as if they were employing you: arrive on time, return phone calls promptly and maintain professional conduct. Telling the recruiter about the affair you had with your previous boss may not go down too well.

First is not always the best
Don't accept the first offer you get unless it's suitable. Holdout for what you really want.
