Miserable at work with no idea what to do except move to another job? That's not the way to go, says Mary Lyn Miller, veteran career consultant and founder of the Life and Career Clinic, www.l-cc.com.

Instead, she suggests you stop focusing on the job you hate and explore the possibility of making changes to your life and your attitude. Miller's developed a process to help you assess your beliefs and your personality so that you can use it to improve your current work situation.

Step 1
Have the willingness to do something different. Breaking the cycle of doing what you've always done is one of the most difficult tasks. It's time to open your mind to other possibilities.

Step 2:
Be who you are, not who someone else wants you to be. Look at the gifts and talents you have and make a commitment to pursue the things you love most.

Step 3:
Learn how to see yourself. Examine your skills and knowledge and identify how they can be applied to your desired occupation.

Step 4:
Accept yourself, without judgement. This helps eliminate insecurities and will make you more self-assured.

Step 5:
Have a vision. Create a solid statement in about 12 sentences that describes in detail how you see your life related to work.

Step 6:
Take appropriate risks. Zen monks believe the way to enlightenment comes through facing obstacles and difficulties. Assess what you're willing to risk in pursuit of your dream.

Step 7:
Act now. All too often, lack of action holds people back from attaining their ideal. Creating a plan and taking it one step at a time can lead to new and different job opportunities.
