Dumped via SMS

I still remember the best break-up I've ever had. Yes, it was filled with the requisite heartache and tears and its fair share of overreactions (from my side, of course).  But it was the way he broke up with me – an intimate face-to-face, honest conversation over a long sushi lunch at a restaurant overlooking the ocean.

How romantic, right? It was, I must confess, a surprisingly pleasant dumping that I received. I still reminisce about it with my girlfriends when we're discussing the general douchebaggery of men. Because, you know, it's proof that there are some really lovely guys out there. And, heck, us single gals need to keep hope alive.

This experience convinced me that there is a right way to dump someone. And I know, from reading the new Digital Journal survey, that there is DEFINITELY a wrong way too.

According to this survey, 1 in 10 people have been dumped via SMS. One in TEN?! I am horrified!

It is such a "callous, cowardly and decidedly unchivalrous way to end a relationship" that I would actually be GLAD to see that guy leave. In fact, don’t let the door hit you on your ass on your way out. The only thing worse would be a "Please Call It’s Over". (Don't get any ideas now, people.)

According to the survey, other increasingly common ways to dump someone include: Facebook, dating sites and chat rooms. Heck, there's even a breakupemail.com template available. By the way, that break-up e-mail is really fun to play with if you have the time, but I digress…

My point is, break-ups are always hard.

Doing it via SMS, MMS, Whatsapp, BBM, Facebook or Twitter is just plain bitchy. And you know what? Karma is a bitch too.

But in an age where technology is slowly dominating the way we communicate, maybe I'm a bit of a prude. Would you – or have you ever – dumped someone in one of these *ahem* cowardly ways?
