I’m doing this all wrong. Again.

Hi everyone,

By now I’m sure even the most recalcitrant of us have been dragged back to our various posts and into the New Year – albeit kicking and screaming in some cases. And call me cynical, but I’m sure most of us have already broken almost every single resolution we’ve consciously or unconsciously made.

I say consciously or unconsciously because I have a weird relationship with New Year’s resolutions. When I realised I kept on breaking them I tried tricking my brain by making them skelm in one part of my head so that my full consciousness couldn’t rebel against them.

Hey, it was worth a try and yes, I’m obviously not a neurologist.

Anyway, it didn’t work. In fact, they never work. Just to give you an idea, these are the resolutions I’ve broken so far:
•    I’ve eaten about 7000 slices of bread
•    I’ve managed to be smoke free for exactly 5 days before inhaling a packet in just under an hour
•    I’ve already finished the wine I’ve set aside for the entire month
•    I’m not a pro surfer yet
•    I haven’t started writing my new book – not even a page
•    I haven’t phoned my mom once, never mind every third day
•    I have done exactly zero squats
•    I haven’t repacked my cupboards. In fact, I know have a pile of miscellaneous things under my bed that keeps growing steadily.

So I don’t need a doctor in psychology to tell me why I woke up in a bit of a panic this morning. I mean is there anything worse than deciding to take control of your life and then failing miserably at it?

I pondered this as I walked to work this morning (not a resolution, merely because I haven’t fixed my car yet).

And I came up with something. I think my resolutions were all wrong to begin with. In fact, our entire society is all wrong.

We keep on focusing on the wrong things – being thinner, being richer, being more successful. But that’s just a bunch of BS isn’t it? I know that happiness and fulfillment doesn’t come from how you look or what you own. And you know that too.

So why do we keep focusing on the stupid stuff? My new, New Year’s resolution list won’t be about the amount of carbs I eat or how many squats I do. That stuff must come naturally as part of a healthy life.

This time I’m focusing on the important stuff. Honesty, kindness, courage, loyalty, duty, imagination, honour. And yes, phoning my mom.

What are your New Year's resolutions? Do you have any? Or have you already broken most? Tell us!
