Book review: A Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

A Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith (first published in 2015 by Little, Brown)

Cormoran Strike is an ex-military private detective. Having successfully beaten the cops to solving two high-profile cases in the past, he has quite the reputation, aided by his burly looks and prosthetic leg.

Yet despite his obvious skill in solving mysteries, Strike seems a magnet for unpleasantness. Career of Evil is an ode to the trouble he seems to attract. His assistant cum partner Robin, in the midst of wedding planning, receives an unexpected package at the office; a body part.

To make matters worse, the note attached to the package has meaning for Strike. Someone has a personal agenda, wanting to frame Strike and scare Robin – the challenge comes in identifying who is responsible.

Unfortunately for Strike, he knows more than one person who would remove and send away body parts from a victim.

Despite her shock at work, Robin continues trying to plan her wedding, amid stress and pressure from her fiancé to leave her job, for something safer. Fortunately for the reader, Robin is quite the badass and refuses to be scared away from her calling; she is admirable to the core.

As the investigation proceeds and more clues are collected, Strike’s troubled history is revealed, and Robin and Strike exchange secrets and pasts in such a delicate manner, gaining a deeper understanding of each other, and how their pasts are involved in the case.

Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling) is writing royalty. While the story elegantly unfolds, and the reader is convinced they know who the culprit is, Galbraith proves his ability to be a master of the red herring.

Once the (completely unexpected) killer is revealed, it’s necessary to put the book down and marvel at how we were played from the start. And what a refreshing feeling that is. The characters in Career of Evil are like friends; Galbraith delves into the human psyche with panache and style. Robin is a strong, enviable female character who embodies bravery and courage. Her fiancé is at times infuriating and sweet, and Strike is Strike; bold, burly and brilliant.

A tasty morsel of literature, Career of Evil keeps you guessing and prompts many verbal exclamations, reprimanding characters or encouraging them. It is ultimate immersion in a neat box.

Do yourself a favour and read this book; for added enjoyment, I would recommend the audiobook, which means Career of Evil on the go. It’s a win-win.
