Girl in Snow by Danya Kukafka( first published in 2017 by Pan Macmillan)

Schoolgirl Lucinda Hayes is found dead in the snow. And this sleepy American town is about to be ripped apart.

In the aftermath of her murder we see this cold, uncertain world split open. The tragedy is told through the eyes of three beautifully crafted, rich and relatable characters, Cameron, Jade, and Russ.

Told from each character’s perspective, this world is about extremes as we are constantly confronted with contrasting themes that speak to death vs. life, reality vs. dreaming, love vs. obsession, and everyday vs. eerie.

Cameron is the strange boy who everyone suspects immediately. He is the one who has forever been dreaming about Lucinda, the porcelain-skinned girl who he loved so desperately. But did he love her or did it border on extreme obsession? An obsession which finally led to her detriment, maybe?

Jade, the girl who always watched from the side-lines, the one who craved to live Lucinda’s seemingly perfect life. Always observing, she might just know more than she lets on.

And Russ, the officer assigned to investigate the murder is perhaps the most interesting character of them all. Haunted by the past, he grapples with constant feelings of guilt and ambivalence over where his allegiances lie as his roles as police officer, friend and husband constantly overlap.

We constantly doubt who killed Lucinda. It could have been any of them.

With writing like this, words almost become more beautiful and more meaningful. A must read for those fascinated by a human’s ability to be both good and evil, all at once.
