Know your nation: how peri-peri got its name

accreditation

Nobody is sure if the African Bird’s Eye chilli was indigenous to Africa or if it was introduced to the continent by early Portuguese explorers.

However, what is known is that the Portuguese are responsible for spreading the chilli to the four corners of the world as they blazed a trail along the eastern spice route, trading and selling their different spices to an eager world.

The Swahili called the chilli “pili-pili”, which literally means “pepper-pepper”.

Whether the Portuguese sailors found it difficult to say this word, or whether they simply wanted to give it their own particular slant is not known for sure. However, they dubbed the chilli “peri-peri”, and the name stuck.

Wherever the chilli went, it was welcomed with open arms, and quickly adopted as an inexpensive means to flavour dishes and create spicy sauces. It is now one of the most popular seasonings in the world.
